FAQs

We know our visitors have lots of questions so we will keep this page updated with frequently asked ones and some answers.
Why is Hackney Museum closed?

Thanks to a grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Hackney Museum is redeveloping its permanent galleries and community spaces. We plan to reopen in 2027. Click here to read our press release for more information about the project.

Why is this project happening now?

Hackney Museum’s current permanent exhibition opened in 2002. After over 20+ years of use and thousands of visitors, it needs to be updated to ensure that it is still relevant for visitors, and also for staff to look after the whole Museum.

What is going to change?

We have listened to feedback from hundreds of local people during extensive consultation and some things will stay, like the Anglo-Saxon logboat and Pie and Eel shop, but other things will change. The refurbished Hackney Museum will open in the same place, on the ground floor of 1 Reading Lane, below Hackney Central Library.

How can I get involved with this project?

There are around 30 strands of community engagement projects, skills development and public programmes alongside the new displays. Most of these are in collaboration with identified partners. To find out about opportunities to get involved, join our mailing list to receive our monthly newsletter.

How do I donate an item to the Museum?

While Hackney Museum staff work on the redevelopment project, we will not be able to accept any new donations to the collection except in exceptional circumstances.

I have an idea for a project with Hackney Museum, who do I contact?

All Museum staff will be working on this redevelopment project so we are unable to support any other projects until at least 2028. If you have an idea for a future project, email [email protected] and your enquiry will be forwarded to the relevant people to discuss further with you.

Can I book for my group / school class to visit Hackney Museum?

You class will not be able to visit Hackney Museum but we do have other options available. Please visit our Schools page for more information.

Where can I buy I Love Hackney mugs or t-shirts?

We have a small quantity of mugs and t-shirts. Email us your request at [email protected] and we can let you know the costs, including post and packaging, of sending you the items.
